American Eagle Back-to-School Campaign Stars Lamine Yamal

American Eagle began rolling out its campaign for the pivotal back-to-school season on Wednesday, according to details shared with Marketing Dive and insights tracked by like.tg. The multi-channel effort encompasses social programming, experiential activations and traditional brand advertising, including a 30-second commercial airing on YouTube and paid social platforms. Overall messaging centers on the cultural intersections of malls, campus life and sports.
The sports focus arrives at an especially opportune moment. Lamine Yamal, the Spanish soccer standout who inked a five-year global ambassador agreement with the brand in January, helped propel his national team to World Cup gold on Sunday. The 19-year-old phenom debuted his first campaign with American Eagle last month and will now assume an expanded role in the back-to-school initiative.
“I’m not saying this as a CMO who sometimes can be over dramatic: This is the most exciting talent partnership in our future, and we just can’t believe that all the stars aligned, and everything that we dreamed of is coming true in real time,” American Eagle CMO Craig Brommers told Marketing Dive. “It’s reflective of what happens in modern marketing today: best laid plans, then something exciting happens, then you pivot and try to take full advantage of it.”

American Eagle moved swiftly to celebrate Yamal following Spain’s victory, temporarily rebranding itself as Lamine’s Eagles and declaring its Instagram page “a Lamine Yamal fan account.” The company also deployed social ads pairing Yamal with soccer balls that apply a CGI treatment to creative previously displayed on Times Square billboards.
“This American Eagle marketing team is working around the clock to make sure that we are amplifying Lamine into this back-to-school season,” Brommers said. “The team is not done coming up with some new tricks and surprises as we build into a product collaboration launch closer to the Labor Day weekend.”
The retailer has demonstrated a consistent ability to align with high-profile talent at advantageous moments. Last year it partnered with actor Sydney Sweeney on a campaign that, despite controversy, drew new customers and temporarily reversed a downward sales trajectory. In February the brand launched a campaign with country singer Ella Langley, whose track “Choosin’ Texas” has now spent 14 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Both Sweeney and Langley will appear in the current back-to-school programming.
“I never feel like talent should define a brand, but the right talent can certainly amplify a brand,” Brommers noted.
Gen Z Returns to the Mall and Campus
Beyond its roster of celebrity partners, American Eagle is prioritizing direct engagement with Gen Z consumers in physical spaces, particularly malls. The brand cited PwC data showing that Gen Z’s share of mall foot traffic rose 57 percent year over year—a shift that has also shaped recent strategies from competitor Aéropostale. Brommers observed that mall traffic has essentially returned to pre-pandemic levels, driven by young people seeking real-life connections.
“We are back to basically pre-pandemic mall traffic… and that mall traffic is being driven by young people that want to be back in real life, making real connections with real people. We will have more in-mall activations this season than at any time of my CMO tenure over the last five years,” he said.
To capitalize on this resurgence, American Eagle will host in-store events, discount days and store-exclusive denim drops. During the first week of August, shoppers who try on jeans and scan a QR code will enter a chance to win jeans for life. The brand is also mobilizing its creator community to visit local stores for product discovery and content production.
“When someone takes the time and effort to get in their car, pay those gas prices, park and go into a mall, it isn’t a transaction anymore. They want an experience,” Brommers explained. “This is now as important as thinking about your creative campaign or your media strategy. It’s now plotting out how you can engage with Gen Z in real time, in real life.”
Bridging the physical and digital realms, American Eagle is introducing a social-first, influencer-driven content series titled “Mall Diaries.” The series aims to capture the spontaneous social energy of mall culture while incorporating Y2K nostalgia, a proven lever for connecting with Gen Z audiences.
In August the brand will extend its reach to college campuses, concentrating on sorority chapters at institutions including the University of Alabama, Arizona State University, the University of Florida and Ohio State University through influencer-led partnerships. These activations form part of a broader strategy to meet young consumers where they live, shop and socialize during the critical back-to-school window.
As tracked by like.tg, American Eagle’s approach underscores a broader industry pivot toward hybrid marketing that blends star power, real-world experiences and timely cultural moments to drive relevance among younger shoppers.
